Julie M. Barkmeier-Kraemer,
Ph.D. is an associate professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing
Sciences at The University of Arizona with expertise in evaluation and management
of voice and swallowing disorders. Dr. Barkmeier-Kraemer's research focuses
on normal and abnormal physiology associated with neurogenic function of the
larynx for voice, respiration, and swallowing. Recent dysphagia research includes
investigation of central pathways associated with deglutition as indicated through
the study of individuals with Parkinson Disease and Deep Brain Stimulation.
In addition, she is currently investigating important factors for successfully
establishing an interdisciplinary team for evaluation and management of feeding,
swallowing, and nutrition.
Laura A. Nickerson, M.S., is a doctoral student in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at The University of Arizona. Laura's doctoral level focus includes the areas of dysphagia and neuroscience under the direction of Julie Barkmeier-Kraemer, PhD. Laura received her Master of Science degree from the same program in 2009. During that year, she was one of the recipients of ArSHA's James Case Graduate Student Clinician award. Laura is currently investigating factors associated with treatment outcomes associated with the use of surface neuromuscular electrical stimulation for the treatment of swallowing disorders in post-stroke adults.
Cynthia LaBrie Norall, Ph.D. is a Licensed Educational Psychologist (LEP), a nationally certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist, and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Dr. Norall is the Clinical Director of Comprehensive Autism Services and Education (C.A.S.E., Inc.) and an Educational and Behavioral Consultant in many school districts around San Diego and Riverside counties. In 1992, Dr. Norall realized that she wanted to work with children and teens diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders but did not yet know which path she wanted to take. In 1996, it came to her. She would focus on behavioral therapies and developing appropriate educational programs for persons with communication and social challenges.
She is trained in ABA, DTT, PECS, PRT, TEACCH, Floortime (DIR) and social thinking (MGW). Her dissertation included research on Parent Perspectives Regarding Educational Resources for Children with Autism. Dr. Norall's mentors in the field of autism are Dr. B.J. Kathryn M. Yorkston, Ph.D. is Head of the Division of Speech Pathology and Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at University of Washington, Seattle. She also holds an adjunct appointment in the Department of Speech & Hearing Sciences. Dr. Yorkston has a long history of clinical research and publication in acquired neurologic communication disorders in adults. She is past-president of the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences (ANCDS). She has authored two texts, Management of Speech and Swallowing in Degenerative Diseases and Management of Motor Speech Disorders in Children and Adults. Dr. Yorkston is currently chairing the ANCDS writing committee for systematic reviews in dysarthria. She also serves as a core faculty member for the doctoral program in Rehabilitation Science at University of Washington.
Kathleen M. Youse, Ph.D. CCC-SLP, BC ANCDS is an assistant professor in the Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Kentucky. In addition to the American Speech- Language and Hearing Association's (ASHA) Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP), Dr. Youse is a Board Certified member of the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences (ANCDS).
Her research investigates the impact of cognitive deficits, in particular deficits of attention and memory, on communication in individuals with traumatic brain injury. Recent research endeavors examine the validity of treating deficits of attention and memory as a means for improving proficiency of conversational discourse in this population.
Dr. Youse has numerous years of clinical experience as a Speech- Language Pathologist treating individuals with acquired brain injury in the acute stages of rehabilitation. She has worked at several hospitals around the country in her career, including: Moss Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland; and St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. In January, 2011, Dr. Youse will be leaving the University of Kentucky to become the Director of the Edward D. Mysak Clinic for Communication Disorders at Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York City.
