Hi Everyone:

The ASHA Legislative Council (LC) just finished their successful spring meeting held March 23-25, 2007 in Bethesda, MD. A special thank you goes to Julie Noel, Speaker of the Council and the Legislative Council Governing Board (LCGB) who planned the meeting. During its meeting, the Legislative Council adopted a new ASHA governance structure and process. The new governance model provides designated representation for audiologists and speech-language pathologists on a new Board of Directors and establishes an Audiology Advisory Council and a Speech-Language Pathology Advisory Council that will include 53 members in each Council. You will be hearing more about this change that will have an impact on ASHA’s future and how you can get involved. After the LC meeting, the Executive Board (EB) held a meeting. Following is a summary of the meeting.  Please let me know if you have any comments or questions. Have a great spring!!

2007 Minority Student Leadership Program Call for Applications is Now Open!
Wednesday, 28 March 2007
The Minority Student Leadership Program (http://www.asha.org/students/mslp.htm)  is open to students who wish to enhance their leadership skills, interact with leaders in the professions, and learn how their association works. Now in its 9th year, this program has given over 250 students from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds insight into their leadership abilities, a better understanding of how leaders affect change within ASHA, and has empowered these students to take risks and meet their own challenges. All students are eligible to apply; however, preference will be given to students from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds that have historically been under-represented in the Association. Visit MSLP FAQ’s  for more information and to download an application packet.

President’s Message

On behalf of the ArSHA Executive Board, I extend hearty greetings for the New Year!  May this year overflow with fulfilling experiences for you.

In December of 2006, the Audiology Task Force was already garnering its energies in preparation for the time when House Bill 2439 would be in legislative hands.  The New Year began and the Bill is now in legislative hands. Audiologists and ArSHA lobbyist Jason Isaak have been busily monitoring and discussing the intricacies of getting this Bill passed.  I have been privy to the flurry of e-mails between the members of the Audiology Task Force and I marvel at their enthusiasm, camaraderie, and comments.  ArSHA President-Elect, Audiologist Debra Venkatesh is out of the country for a couple of weeks and I can imagine the amount of e-mails awaiting her.   Read the current information about House Bill 2439 on the ArSHA website AND please contact your legislator in support of this Bill.

Arizona Dept. of Education Certification Clarification
Wednesday, 17 January 2007
Dear Members:

We recently received confirmation for school based SLPs applying for the Speech Language Pathology Certificate at the Arizona Department of Education. You will need to submit a notarized photocopy of your CCC (if they are using the CCC to waive the exam).  Do not send the original CCC, you can just make a copy and take it to a notary public to have the copy notarized.  If you have any questions regarding this or other portions of the certification process, please contact Maura Yildirim at maura.yildirim@azed.gov or at 602-364-0127.

Thank you,
Amy Heck

President’s Message

Autumn Greetings! The season heralds the inevitability of change and ArSHA’s work also reflects transitions.

Audiologists are in the midst of enacting change in their licensure law.  The Audiology Review Committee has spent many hours discussing and formulating language to reflect the requirement for the doctoral degree for all future licensees. This action is in response to ASHA’s mandate that the entry level degree to practice Audiology will be the doctorate degree.  A “Town Hall” meeting was recently held to review the proposed revisions.  A healthy mixture of students, university faculty, and practicing audiologists participated in this event and at this writing, the process continues to the next level….getting the revisions into proper “bill language”.

Revisions to certification requirements for school-based speech/language pathologists also head in the direction of upgraded professional standards.  Arizona is one of 3 states that recognizes a Bachelor’s level as a minimum entry level. Effective January 1, 2007, the speech and language pathologists will be in the professional non-teaching category.  Furthermore, the requirements for Bachelor’s level individuals to obtain and maintain a certificate are more stringent and support continuing education towards a Master’s degree.
