If I want to work in the educational
setting as a Speech-Language Pathologist do I need to get a teaching certificate
from the Arizona Department of Education to work?

If I want to work in Early Intervention as a Speech-Language
Pathologist do I need to fulfill any additional requirements?
There are additional requirements for Speech Language Pathologists who work

How many contact/continuing
education hours does the state of Arizona require for licensed Speech-Language
Pathologists and Audiologists?
Every 12 months from the effective date of a regular license, a licensee
shall complete eight credit hours or more of CE approved by the Department.
A credit hour consists of a minimum of 50 continuous minutes of instruction
(Article 2. Licensing Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists, Section
R9-16-207).
How many contact/continuing education
hours does ASHA require for Certified Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists?
Beginning in 2003 for Audiologists and in 2005 for Speech-Language Pathologists,
30 contact hours of professional development activities are required every
3 years.
What are my options
for accumulating contact hours for ASHA?
- Employer-sponsored in-service activities: 30 contact hours every
3 years
- Other continuing education activities: 30 contact hours every 3
years
- ASHA-approved CE provider programs: 3 ASHA CEUs every 3 years
- Regionally accredited college or university course work: 2 semester
hours every 3 years
Do I have to
take the Arizona Educators Proficiency Assessments to become certified by the
Arizona Department of Education?
If you are a have a bachelor’s degree then you will need to complete the Spec Ed Speech and Language Impairment (31) tests http://www.aepa.nesinc.com/ prior to applying for certification. If you are relocating from out of state, please contact the Arizona Department of Education Certification Department at 602-542-4367 to see if you need to meet this requirement.
If I have my bachelor’s degree and
want to work in the school setting what do I need to do?
- Apply for a fingerprint clearance card through the Department of Public
Safety http://www.dps.state.az.us/reports/fingerprint/faq/default.asp.
- Take the Spec Ed Speech and Language Impairment (31) tests http://www.aepa.nesinc.com/ prior to applying for certification.

- Apply for Speech Language Technician Certificate: http://www.ade.state.az.us/certification/downloads/Application.pdf
- Once you receive the certificate then you are required to get a License
from the Department of Health Services. Complete the Initial License Application
through the Arizona Department of Health Services http://www.azdhs.gov/als/forms/audslp.pdf.
You would check the box for a Speech Language Pathology Limited License and
submit items requested in section D on the form.

(SLPA)?

Does Arizona license Speech
Language Pathology Assistants?
The state of Arizona legislature has recently passed licensure for SLPA’s.
The statute is currently being reviewed by the Arizona Department of Health
Services (SLP licensing body) to determine the need for additional rules and
regulations. You
